While from out the east,
Camels, bearing gifts and men,
Sway across the sand.

Poem for the Day

No room in the inn, of course,
And not that much in the stable
What with the shepherds, Magi, Mary,
Joseph, the heavenly host -
Not to mention the baby
Using our manger as a cot.
You couldn’t have squeezed another cherub in
For love or money.

Still, in spite of the overcrowding,
I did my best to make them feel wanted.
I could see the baby and I
Would be going places together.

Frightened shepherds ran,
Unsure of what they had seen.
Was it just the wine?

But some were certain.
And, with lambs in their arms, ran
Towards Bethlehem.

Poem for the Day

Sitting under the mistletoe
(Pale-green, fairy mistletoe),
One last candle burning low,
All the sleepy dancers gone,
Just one candle burning on,
Shadows lurking everywhere:
Some one came, and kissed me there.

Tired I was; my head would go
Nodding under the mistletoe
(Pale-green, fairy mistletoe),
No footsteps came, no voice, but only,
Just as I sat there, sleepy, lonely,
Stooped in the still and shadowy air
Lips unseen - and kissed me there.

As stars lit the sky
People said they heard music,
Swore they saw the glow

Of cherubim and
Seraphim, and on their lips
The song of angels.
